Culliton Creek Hydro Facility

Project Summary
The Culliton Creek Hydro Facility is a run-of-river hydroelectric project located approximately 20 km north of Squamish. The facility has the capacity to generate 15 megawatts (MW) of clean renewable electricity – enough power for approximately 5,900 homes. Construction on the Project was completed in December 2015.

Work on the Culliton Creek Hydro Facility has been ongoing since 2002. The project has undertaken a rigorous permitting and review process, including an environmental review process which involved more than 12 federal, provincial, local and First Nations authorities and included the following:

  • Hydrology, Geomorphology, Instream Flow Requirements
  • Wildlife & Wildlfe Habitat
  • Vegetation

The Facility includes four main components as indicated below:

Intake Sheetpile and concrete spillway with an inflatable weir to divert water from Culliton Creek
Penstock 3.2 km long, combination of steel and HDPE pipe to deliver water downstream to the powerhouse
Powerhouse Containing 2 X 7.5 MW Vertical Pelton turbines
Transmission Line 12.6 km of 69 kV wood-pole transmission line

Financing and Construction Update

BluEarth closed non-recourse construction and term debt financing for the Culliton Creek Hydro Project on July 18. Read the press release.

All site preparation is now complete and construction works are proceeding on site. Project site offices are currently being installed and contractors for headworks and penstock construction are being mobilized.

Construction Update

Work is underway on the Culliton Creek Hydro Project.  Site preparation is nearing completion and we expect this work to be completed in mid-June. In June, the project team will be installing a temporary bridge to provide increased access to specific project areas and there will be small amounts of blasting, starting the week of June 2nd for about two to three weeks, in order to complete a portion of slope stabilization to ensure safety along main access roads in the project area.

Full-scale construction is expected to begin in July 2014, including major works for the intake/headworks and penstock.  The powerhouse construction is expected to start in October 2014 and the transmission line in January 2015.

Project Permitting Completed

In January, BluEarth Renewables completed final regulatory requirements to acquire the Culliton Creek Hydro Project.   With all the permitting in place, BluEarth expects to start construction of the project in the summer of this year.
