How many scholarships are awarded each year?

The number of scholarships awarded will vary depending on the number of applications we receive. However, at least one scholarship will be awarded for each category.

How will I know if I have been selected?

We will notify you directly if you are selected in the fall.

What are the eligibility requirements?

  • A resident of Canada of the United States
  • Pursuing full-time studies at an accredited Canadian or United States trades or technical school, college or university
  • Indigenous Peoples Scholarship only: A member of an Aboriginal community (band or settlement), including First Nations, Métis and Inuit
  • Renewable Energy Trades Scholarship only: Enrolled in a renewable energy trades program with a direct focus on wind, hydro or solar energy

How will recipients be selected?

We will review your application based on case for financial support, academic merit, community involvement, pursuit of studies that could be transferable to the clean energy sector, and proximity to the locations where we live, work and operate (or have development projects).

What is the definition of renewable (clean) energy?

Energy that does not pollute the atmosphere when used, including, but not limited to wind, solar and hydroelectric power.

I don’t meet all the requirements listed in your selection criteria – should I still apply?

Absolutely! As long as you meet the eligibility requirements, the selection criteria are simply a guide. For instance, if you have strong community involvement and academic merit, but your studies are not clearly transferable to the renewable energy sector, you will still be considered.

What is considered a full course load?

A full course load is successfully completing at least 80% of the full course load required for your program. This means if you are required to take five courses per semester, you can take a minimum of four to be awarded the full scholarship. If you drop a course, the award will be pro-rated to account for what has been completed. If you are unsure if you have a full course load, provide a listing of your program requirements and which courses you intend to take, and the selection committee will make an assessment.

What does ‘good academic standing’ mean?

‘Good academic standing’ will vary and should be confirmed with your post-secondary institution. Scholarship recipients will be required to provide their grades at the end of each semester or term.

What programs are eligible?

For our Indigenous Peoples and Community Leaders Scholarships, all post-secondary programs at accredited trades or technical schools, colleges and universities in Canada and the United States are eligible.

For our Renewable Energy Trades Scholarship, you must be enrolled in a renewable energy trades program with a direct focus on wind, hydro or solar energy at accredited trades or technical schools, colleges and universities in Canada or the United States.

What if I am only planning to study part time — am I still eligible?

Part-time students are eligible, however, the amount of the award may be prorated as a result.

What if I get into a different program than the one listed in the application?

Notify the selection committee at aces@bluearth.ca as soon as you confirm your program. Your application can be amended where required.

My program doesn’t start until the winter semester — am I still eligible?

Yes. Payment of the award will correspond with the recipient’s academic year.

Would receiving one of the BluEarth Renewables Scholarships make me ineligible for needs-based funding?

You should check with your needs-based funder to determine how the award would impact other funding.

I have received funding from another scholarship, would I still be eligible?

We have no restrictions for students who have received other awards.

How are funds paid to students?

Scholarships are awarded in two instalments, typically in October and February.

What is a BluEarth mentor?

If you are the successful scholarship recipient, you can choose to enroll in our mentorship program and we will assign a BluEarth employee who will act as a learning partner for your academic year. This program is for two-way communication to inspire, challenge, and motivate students as well as BluEarth employees. You will be encouraged to seek advice about your course work, volunteerism, possible career paths, etc. The learning partner will be as closely matched to your field of study as possible.
