Recipient of the Community Leaders Scholarship

Emmitt Carlson

Hello, my name is Emmitt Carlson. I am a first-year Bachelor of Commerce student at the University of Calgary. I was born and raised in Claresholm, Alberta, a small agricultural community south of Calgary. Growing up around the agricultural industry, I saw how innovation, effective resource management, and economic stability are all interconnected. My first-hand experience with the need for constant innovation is what sparked my interest in studying business and in exploring the renewable energy sector as a meaningful career path.

I am honoured to be a recipient of BluEarth Renewables’ Community Leaders Scholarship. Not only does this award ease the financial stress of pursuing my education, but it also reinforces the idea that rural Canadians have a critical role in shaping the clean energy future of Canada. Through supporting my academic journey, this scholarship allows me to excel in my studies while pursuing new opportunities and gaining hands-on experience that will allow me to make positive, lasting impacts on society. As I continue my education and enter the workforce, I intend to expand and strengthen my network throughout Calgary’s innovative energy sector.

As I gain my CPA designation, I plan to ensure that companies within the renewable energy market have access to the skilled financial reporting teams they need. This expertise will empower renewable energy companies to be able to operate as effectively and efficiently as possible, expanding Canada’s clean energy market.

Receiving the BluEarth Renewables Community Leaders Scholarship is a meaningful honour that supports both my academic and personal goals. Zeyus Spenta

Hi everyone! My name is Zeyus Spenta, and I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science at the University of British Columbia. Much of my work has centred on community leadership and sustainability, from supporting STEM outreach across British Columbia to developing a self-filtering water bottle that addresses clean drinking-water challenges in rural and Indigenous communities. These experiences have shaped my belief in using education and innovation to strengthen community well-being.

Receiving the BluEarth Renewables Community Leaders Scholarship means a great deal to me. It eases the financial pressures of post-secondary studies and allows me to focus more fully on my coursework, volunteer commitments, and leadership roles. I am especially grateful for the mentorship component, which provides an invaluable opportunity to learn more about the renewable energy sector. Alysa Lee

I am currently studying at Nipissing University, where I am majoring in Accounting and Human Resources with a minor in Legal Studies. My program has helped me develop strong skills in financial management, leadership, and understanding the laws and policies that guide organizations. I plan to use these skills to support sustainable development and play an important role in the growing field of renewable energy. Receiving this scholarship means so much to me. Financially, it takes a lot of pressure off and gives me the chance to focus more on my studies instead of worrying about balancing school and work. It also encourages me to keep pushing forward, knowing that others believe in my potential. In the long run, I hope to use my education to support renewable energy projects from behind the scenes.

Clean energy relies not only on technology but also on strong financial planning, good workplace culture, and careful attention to rules and standards. I want to help organizations build those systems, whether that means managing budgets for green initiatives, supporting training for clean energy careers, or making sure projects are run ethically and responsibly.

This scholarship gives me the chance to move forward with more confidence and focus. I am truly grateful for this support and excited to continue building a career that contributes to both my community and a more sustainable future.

Karter Harry

I am an engineering student at the University of British Columbia with a deep interest in innovation, sustainability, and community-focused design. My fascination with how things work, from cameras to architecture to rockets, has shaped my path, but it was my experience working for three summers at Spirit Works, an Indigenous company creating authentic cultural products, that helped me discover my passion. While I enjoyed sanding Bentwood Boxes, working with jewelry, and assisting with creative projects, I realized that my love of woodworking stemmed from a broader passion for design, problem-solving, and building practical solutions. This, coupled with my connection to Indigenous culture, specifically environmental stewardship, led me to pursue engineering at university, with specific consideration towards renewable energy and sustainable technologies, to benefit the environment and local communities. I envision university as a threshold to create meaningful impact, as its resources offer the ability to make a big change in renewable energy, as I get to learn about it in individual classes, while speaking to professors, joining clubs, and more, building the foundation to make significant environmental changes in the future.

This scholarship significantly reduces the financial burden related to tuition, textbooks, and living expenses, allowing me to spend more time and energy on my studies and on meaningful engagements like clubs, volunteering and other miscellaneous ventures. In short, it would help me make the most of my education and continue building the skills and relationships that will allow me to make a positive difference in the world.

Jalen Herring

My name is Jalen Herring and I’ve been a resident of Laveen, Arizona my entire life. I am currently a junior in the Honors College at the University of Arizona majoring in Communications. This scholarship is a great help to me financially and my academic goals.  I am trying to graduate debt free and this scholarship helps me to achieve that goal. I worked for several years and saved for college but my savings have quickly been depleted. I have to live away from home and living expenses are very expensive  I am a full-time student who is active in my community. I volunteer with various organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, my church and youth sports. I would like to one day be a journalist reporting on culture and the world. This will be a dream to learn about different cultures and how they are affected by their environment.

I am a member of the Muscogee Creek Nation. All four of my great grandparents were born in Oklahoma, where my tribe is located. I live within two miles of the Gila River Indian Reservation in Arizona. I have many influences of Native American culture living in Arizona. I have attended many conferences and I was a member of my school Native American program. In 2022, I was selected to play in the Indigenous Football Bowl in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This was a life changing experience for me learning about different Indigenous cultures in the US and Canada, in addition to playing my favorite sport, football.

Darius Sam

My name is Darius Sam. I am 25 years old and currently in my fourth year of the Interior Salish Linguistics program at UBC Okanagan. I grew up between the Rocky Pines Indian Reserve and the Douglas Lake Indian Reserve, where I was raised in a very traditional way. Those teachings shaped who I am and continue to guide the work I do today.

Studying Interior Salish languages has become a major part of my life. I care deeply about language revitalization, cultural preservation, and creating opportunities for future generations to connect with their identity. My goal is to support long-term language renewal efforts that honour the knowledge and leadership of our Elders while helping young people feel proud of who they are.

Outside of school, I have been involved in a variety of charity and community projects over the years. Whether it is fundraising, supporting youth programs, or helping with community initiatives, I try to give back in a meaningful way. Contributing to the wellness of my communities is something that has always been important to me.

I hope to continue using what I learn to build strong connections between traditional knowledge and education. In the long run, I want to play a positive role in keeping our languages alive and to be someone younger people can look up to.

Julian Costigan

I am currently a first-year student in the Wind Turbine Technician program at St. Lawrence College. Before then, I completed a Bachelor of Arts in French and Mathematics at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Upon finishing my program at SLC, I’d like to work as a wind technician in Canada first, and then potentially working overseas as a travelling technician. Once I have gained enough experience in the renewable energy industry, I plan to return to Newfoundland to try and help push for the development of a bigger wind energy sector, one of Newfoundland’s most abundant natural resources. This scholarship will help me achieve this by paying for my schooling, easing my financial load, and allowing me to focus on my studies. I’m grateful to have been chosen for this scholarship, and hope to pay it back someday by working in our country’s green energy sector.
