Commissioning Celebration at the Loyalist Solar Facility

Last week, BluEarth was joined by our partners, the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, as well as Township of Stone Mills council and staff, staff from the County of Lennox and Addington, landowners and project contractors to celebrate the commissioning of the Loyalist Solar Facility. The 54 MWAC facility is located in the Township of Stone Mills, Ontario and is owned by Loyalist Solar LP, a 50:50 partnership between BluEarth Renewables and the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte.

“This milestone reflects many years of hard work from greenfield development to construction, and I’m very proud of the team,” said Jamey Fitzgibbon, Executive Vice-President, Engineering and Construction of BluEarth Renewables. “This project is great example of how our team can execute through the full lifecycle of projects, turning conceptual ideas into reality while working collaboratively with partners and local communities to provide environmental and economic benefit to the region.”

Construction began on the project in May 2018 after several years of community consultation, environmental studies, regulatory approvals and permitting. Major construction was completed in 10 months and provided nearly 350,000 hours of local employment.

The facility, which began operations in April 2019, consists of over 249,000 photovoltaic panels and 28 inverters, and produces enough renewable energy to power about 11,000 homes annually*. Power from this facility will be sold under a power purchase agreement to the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).

Through the Community Vibrancy Fund, the Loyalist Solar Facility will provide economic benefit to the Township of Stone Mills for decades to come.

*Based on the average Ontario home electricity usage of 9.5 MWh per year
