Position Title

Control Room Supervisor

Location

Calgary, Alberta

Reporting Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer, or designate

Accountabilities and Key Functions

The control room and its staff are responsible for providing 24/7 operator-in-charge of our growing portfolio of commercial-scale wind, solar, and run-of-river hydroelectric facilities across Canada and the United States. The control room supervisor is accountable for the safe, efficient, and optimized operation of our control room, including maintaining operational compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements.

Our control room is currently in the development stage, with operations targeted to commence in 2019.  The control room supervisor will initially work with our technical and site staff to develop protocols and procedures for the control room operators, hire and train control room staff, and prepare for full live operations in January 2019.

Key functions include:

  • Provide inspiring leadership to our team of control room operators
  • Coordinate and manage operator shift scheduling to provide 24/7/365 coverage in the control room
  • Develop and oversee the execution of procedures, work instructions, and training programs for the facilities and applications monitored in the control room
  • Work with facility operators and technicians to develop and review procedures and work instructions to ensure safe operations
  • Work with facility operators and technicians to continually review and improve how the control room remotely operates the facilities, including reviewing fault conditions that can be handled by the control room, and responses to specific site conditions
  • Work with plant operators and technicians to identify, develop, and improve reports detailing recent site operation that are distributed to facility staff on a regular basis
  • Maintain and work to continually improve communications between control room operators and field personnel
  • Develop continuous training programs for operators
  • Coordinate with external regulatory and compliance organizations to ensure the control room is operating according to the latest applicable standards
  • Assist control room operators during emergencies and periods of heavy workload
  • Ensure the control room and its operators provide a quick response to system emergencies, responding with agreed time limits to call-outs
  • Cover shifts, if required, in the control room under emergency situations
  • Provide after hour support, if required, for the control room operators
  • Develop and implement continuous control room improvement strategies, including long-term preventative planning and strategies to allow for continued growth in the numbers of sites/installed capacity monitored by the control room
  • Manage control room log books
  • Develop and oversee effective shift handover procedures
  • Uphold all aspects of BluEarth’s environmental, health & safety policies, practices, and programs; and

Education

  • Degree, diploma or technical certification in power engineering, power systems, or electrical work

Experience

  • Minimum eight years’ experience working in the power generation industry with strong preference for renewable power experience
  • Experience working in a control room setting
  • Demonstrated competency in a leadership role
  • Experience working around high, medium, and low voltage equipment
  • Strong technical knowledge of renewable electricity generation operations, including the functionality, design, and operation of wind and hydro turbines and generators, solar generation facilities, and balance-of-plant components
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety regulations, relevant SLD drawings, schematics and operations, service and other procedural manuals;
  • Familiarity and competency with industry standard SCADA systems and software
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills for both electrical and communications systems
  • Experience with NERC and/or NERC System Operator Certification an asset
  • Experience working with provincial/state electrical authorities is an asset

  • Ability to travel within Canada and internationally
