Position Overview

BluEarth is looking to hire a blend of all level control room operators, including junior level all the way up to senior level to support the launch and further facilitation of our BEAM Control Centre, based in Calgary, Alberta. This position will report to the BEAM Control Room Supervisor.

The Control Room Operator will be held accountable for monitoring and the real-time operation of BluEarth Renewable’s growing fleet of commercial scale wind, solar and run-of-river hydroelectric facilities, across Canada and the United States. The Control Room Operator is accountable for the safe, efficient, and optimized operation of such facilities including maintaining operational compliance with all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.

The BEAM control centre is currently in the development stage with operations targeted to commence in January 2019, therefore initially the Operator will successfully complete the BluEarth Renewable Control Centre Operator Training program which includes a combination of online, classroom, and on-the-job training.

Accountabilities and Duties

  • Act as the single point of contact and controlling authority for deployment and dispatch of all generation facilities and associated equipment to assure a safe and efficient integration of resource plans;
  • Use three-way type communications with field personnel, RTO’s, and ISO’s when communicating during all real-time activities;
  • Coordinate and manage generation facility planned and forced outages to ensure an effective removal or restoration process is maintained;
  • Document all required operating events and information in the control centre operating log and compile and forward daily/monthly reports;
  • Gather all relay reports, equipment data, and historical data trend analysis to document all operating events for compliance follow-up;
  • Operate and monitor SCADA system and related tools to ensure functionality and effective performance is maintained, report to technicians all irregularities in data or control capabilities;
  • Ensure energy, water resources and ancillaries resources are optimized and public safety, reliability of equipment and impact on environment is never compromised;
  • Effectively coordinate all normal and emergency control room activities, with field personnel and technicians, office staff and external entities;
  • Ensure all standard and emergency operating procedures are utilized, and provide inputs to ensure they are enhanced where needed;
  • Ensure generation resources are deployed as per schedules and take independent actions when necessary to redeploy minimizing environmental and public safety impacts;
  • Seeks continual improvement within the scope of control room activities and recommends improvement to management;
  • Maintain individual development plan including continuous training;
  • Uphold all aspects of BluEarth’s Health, Safety and Environmental policies, practices, and programs;
  • Uphold BluEarth’s values and consistently enhance the image and reputation of the Company; and
  • Other duties as required.

Education

  • Engineering or Electrical/Mechanical Technology diploma or degree and/or equivalent experience; and
  • May be required to be certified and qualified in the recognized work protection practices and NERC Operator certification where applicable.

Experience

  • Experience working in power generation, transmission or distribution industry with strong preference towards renewable power experience;
  • Control centre or related experience in emergency dispatch environment;
  • Experience working around high, medium and low voltage equipment;
  • Technical knowledge of renewable power generation operations, functionality and design;
  • Ability to read and interpret SLD’s and other procedural manuals and schematics;
  • Troubleshooting skills for electrical, PLC and/or communications systems;
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent verbal communication and written skills in English;
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work effectively;
  • Strong attention to detail and analysis skills.

Job Requirements

  • Abide with all company policies and business practises;
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license;
  • Ability to work rotating shifts outside of regular business hours, as well as on-call (Monday – Sunday, 24 hour rotating shifts);
  • Ability to travel occasionally within Canada and USA; and
  • Ability to lift-up to 20 pounds.
